Message from Dr. Z

What a wonderful season we presented to this community.   Your mentorship and performance at Festival of Voices was very much appreciated.  The concerts with the Florida Orchestra presenting Faure's Requiem and Orff's Carmina Burana were solid. (I heard from many sources that Carmina was one of our best performances ever and was the highest attended TFO event of the year!!)  We successfully brought back Christmas with The Master Chorale.  Our Winter Retreat with Dale Warland was very productive.  And our Discover! Alice Parker rehearsals, workshop and concerts took us to new musical heights, exploring a style of music we seldom get to perform!  The CD, Discover! Choral Music of Alice Parker and Libby Larsen is completed and it sounds great!

Our 08-09 - 30th Anniversary Season looks very promising: Bernstein, Christmas, Verdi and Mahler!  With this wonderful repertoire, refinement of tone and attention to detail will be our keys to success and vocal growth.

You perform best when we have 5 to 6 rehearsals in preparing a concert.  I have planned for fewer Tuesday rehearsals and will ask for more personal-at-home score preparation.  If we can get 90 to 95% attendance at 5 or 6 rehearsals... we can produce a higher artistic product.  With this kind of schedule it will allow us to take a few Tuesdays off in the fall and spring.  Onward!

You are truly amazing people and I enjoy working with all of you.  Thank you for your commitment to producing quality choral music.  Enjoy these summer months.

This spring, the Board, joined by Rick, Kara, and a facilitator from Transition Guides, held a day-long retreat where we reviewed the strengths and weaknesses of the Chorale and then focused on setting the Chorale's priorities for the next several seasons.  Strategically, we concluded that to best fulfill its mission, the Chorale needs to transform itself into a more outwardly focused organization.  What does that mean?  Development is the key, as in further development of funding sources, Board membership, audiences, and organizational capacity (particularly in terms of self-producing concerts).  We held a spirited discussion as to how the Chorale's leadership -- Rick, the Board and our to-be-hired Executive Director -- can best partner to meet these priorities.  We are fortunate to have in Rick a leader superbly capable of tackling the artistic components of these goals.  Our Executive Director will be charged with achieving administrative and organizational priorities while our Board will focus on fundraising and strategic governance.  Together with our talented singers, as we begin our 30th Anniversary season, we will build on the outstanding legacy of the past 29 seasons.

Auditions for Everyone

August 19 - 26:  Dr. Z will ask all current and former members to audition for him.  There will be no voice placements as in years past.  Your audition will include a 2 - 3 minute (max) piece that really shows off your beautiful voice, sight-singing, rhythm and vocal exercises.  An accompanist will be provided so please bring sheet music for them.  Visit our website for the full schedule and then call the office to set up your appointment (813-974-7726).
Executive Director Search

The Master Chorale has launched a nation wide search for a new Executive Director.  We have been fortunate for many years to have had board leadership  that performed many tasks that would otherwise be done by an Executive Director.  While these individuals have done a fantastic job keeping the Chorale going behind the scenes, it is time to welcome a new member to our staff and take the organizational side of the Chorale to the next level.  We encourage you to spread the word.  More information can be found on our website at www.masterchorale.com

Conducting Apprentice Change
Each season The Master Chorale funds a graduate assistantship in the area of Choral Conducting within the USF School of Music.  This student serves as an assistant to the Music Director, receives private conducting lessons, and learns the administrative duties of a music director.

This past season Melissa Bumbach graced us with her presence under this title.  Melissa has finished her Master's at USF and we wish her the best of luck as she searches for a new job as a music teacher!

Coming in this year as our Conducting Apprentice is Kari Hamada.  Kari attended USF as an undergrad and has sung in the Chorale for several years.  We are most happy to welcome her as our Conducting Apprentice this year!

Jim Heck Trustee of the Season

At our June meeting, the Board honored Jim Heck with the annual Trustee of the Season award.  Currently Executive Advisor and Chair of the Development Committee and a previous Chair for several terms, Jim works tirelessly to support the mission of the Chorale.  Jim's deep roots in the Tampa Bay area serve the Chorale well, whether in meeting fundraising goals or strengthening strategic partnerships.  As a founding Board member, Jim's balanced, long-term perspective helps the Board steer its way smoothly through rougher passages. Congratulations Jim on this well-deserved honor.
Volunteers of the Season

Every season we have outstanding volunteers who go over and above to help The Master Chorale.  We strive to recognize those individuals for their priceless contributions of time and energy.  This year we have chosen to recognize Andrew Carini and John Parigros both of whom are members of The Friends of The Master Chorale, our newly budding volunteer association.

Andrew Carini has provided all of the materials and made, by hand, all of the ladies beautiful holiday corsages and the stunning stage decorations for our Christmas concerts.  Andrew also spends a few minutes before each concert putting the finishing touches on our lobby tables.  We couldn't be more pleased with your efforts, Andrew!  Thank you!

John Parigros is not a singer, however he has made a huge difference for the Chorale this year.  John has been behind the scenes picking up hundreds of cases of water and transporting them to ALL of our events including the concerts and retreats as well as staying through our concerts to keep an eye on purses and bags while we're all on stage.  Taking this load (pun intended) off the MC staff has been more welcome than we can express.  Thank you, John, for all of your help this year!

Christmas Carol Competition
The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay announces their first annual Christmas Carol Competition!  The winner will receive a cash prize and have the opportunity to have their carol performed by The Master Chorale in the 2008 Christmas concerts.  Visit masterchorale.com for guidelines and an application.  We can't wait to hear what Christmas sounds like to you!
2008 Singer Survey Coming

Every summer we post a survey to the MC singers to get their opinions and input on key issues for the Chorale and also to gather information for grant purposes.  The Board of Trustees highly values this information and assigns a non-singing member to read the results and provide a meaningful summary. In addition to the summary, we also provide a link to the individual question results in the Singer's Section of our website.  Last year's results are linked below.  We will send you a notice when this year's survey is available.
