Dear Singers:

What a sound . . . your commitment to creating a unified tone that is connected to the message of Faure's music is extraordinary.  The dynamic range and emotional delivery are intense and sincere.  I so look forward to seeing you next Tuesday (
at USF, USF, USF) as we work with Stefan.  Here are a few thoughts from Stefan and me:

I.  Introit
-Eyes up, I think you can sing the first movement from memory, eyes up, eyes up
-Breath in on the "eh" vowel, use a "d" on your first entrance, create a unified and balanced tone, eyes up,
-
pg. 4 Lu-ce-at (ce = se, not che)  thanks!
-ms. 89-91 raise the pitch 15%

II.
Offertorium
-ms. 6-22, tutti, Last names A-M sing alto line, last names N-
Z sing tenor line (at pitch)
-ms. 75, get your pitches

III. Sanctus
-ms. 5, 7, 9, etc,  touch the eighth note release with the vowel followed by a short "s" before the and of 2 or 3
-Tenor and bass be ready for page turn, p. 27 to 28

V. Agnus Dei
-Be ready page 38, 40 (tenor)
-ms. 44-45 (make the transition)
-ms. 54 move the tempi, mosso

VI. Libera me
-ms. 70 drive it forward, perform  ms. 77 to perfection
-ms. 84 eyes up, precise releases
-ms. 131 not rit.

VII.  In Paradisium
-Take us home angelic soprani
-Alto, Tenor and Bass keep the focus until pg. 68-70, 73-75 (fill the hall with tone!!!)

As the first orchestra chord rings through the hall, think of those we have loved and those we have lost . . . set the tone and emotion.  Thank you again for your work and dedication. See you Tuesday at USF!!!

Sincerely,

Z

Rehearsal Review #9

Dear Singers:

Outstanding Rehearsal!!!  There was a true sense of ensemble, sincere "in tune" singing, and a commitment to detail!  The results were extraordinary.  And, there was real progress in No. 2 Offertorium . . . perform like one collective voice intertwined by the message (and unison pitches) of Faure's setting.

Three word/syllable changes, please mark in score: p. 7, ms. 43-43, Deus for Jesus; p. 16, m. 30 ob-scu-rum for ob-scu-ro ("m" release on beat 3) and p. 23, ms. 89,  ob-scu-rum for ob-scu-ro ("m" release on beat 2).

With one Tuesday rehearsal remaining with our preparation for the Faure REQUIEM before Performance Week, I would like to continue to focus our attention on The Message, Our Tone and the Top 12 BE READY sections:

THE MESSAGE
1.  What are we singing about?
2.  What is the emotion we want the listener to experience?
3.  Who are we thinking about?

TONE
1. Prep each phrase with proper breathing (legato, dynamic,  marcato, vowel formation, etc.)
2. Shape each word (syllabic stress)  Tenore soli and No. 2
3. Shape each phrase (What is the emotion/message?)
4. In divisi section, you must adjust dynamics for balance consistency
5. Purify (and tune) every phrase ending

Top 12 - BE READY SECTIONS
1.  First chord, pg. 3, ms. 2 will set the tone and emotion for the entire REQUIEM
(Also, prepare the "e" vowel with the intake of air, one rolled/flipped "r", tune the d minor chord, remember divisi in men, alti and baritone lock in the f natural)
2.  pg. 5-6, dolce expressivo tenors
3.  pg. 13-15, ms. 6-22, alto and tenor sing as one section (ONE VOICE)
4.  pg. 16, ms. 28 A#, pg. 15, ms. 22-23, lock in the f natural
5.  pg. 36-37, tenors dolce expressivo - let your voices soar!!!
6.  pg. 55-56, ms. 70 keep tempo, ms. 77, forte to piano (basses ms. 79 is an f#)
7.  pg. 26, ms. 12, Db, ms. 13, D natural, ms. 15, Db, ms. 17 D natural
8.  pg. 22-23 ms. 87 don't fall too far into the pit, pg. 23, ms. 90, listen for the alto
9.   pg. 20, ms. 75, get chord/note for next entrance
10.  pg. 67 -68, page turn Be READY (j = ee)
11.  pg. 40-44, lead us tenors,
12.  pg. 41, ms. 45 soprano Lux, one of the GREAT moments in music history, everyone makes the transition of the spirit.

Looking forward to seeing you next week.  Thank you again for your work. Bravo Coro!!!

Dear Master Chorale Member:

THANK YOU for your efforts over the past two weeks!!!  Sectional rehearsals are intense but very, very necessary. We are in our final month of preparation for the Fauré REQUIEM (as well as getting many of the notes and rhythms learned for our Christmas Concerts).  In rehearsal last night, "PREP the REP" was the theme (sectionals, score prep, score marking, voice building, etc.).  Before next week, finalize your score prep assignments (Please go to www.masterchorale.com Singers’ Section and get my markings.)  And . . . .

1) Highlight your part with Yellow marker;
2) Number measures;
3) Complete Red/Blue markings

4) Write in English translations

This process, the score study process, gets us to the next level . . . . a level many ARTS organizations never experience.

PERSONALIZE
With notes, rhythms, dynamics, translations, etc. learned, it is time to start personalizing the message in the music (and unify our Latin pronunciation).  Please review English translation and write them in your score.  We have four weeks to personalize, publicize (SELL SEASON TICKETS), project and polish OUR UPCOMING PERFORMANCE of the Fauré REQUIEM.  Who comes to mind when you are performing this wonderful work?

Again, thanks for your efforts over the past two week!!!  Sectionals rehearsals are intense but very necessary. BRAVO soprani, alti, tenore and basso!!!!  And many thanks to Bob, Melissa, Blake, Amber, Deb, Bill and Justin.   You have put in the hard work and I know the upcoming tutti rehearsal is going to be GREAT!!! We will perform the entire FAURÉ REQUIEM next week.

Looking forward to being with you putting all the pieces back together!!!   See you soon.

Sincerely,

Dr. Z

Dear Singers:

Good work Tuesday night!  Over the next two weeks (9/25, 10/2) we will continue to work on learning/securing the notes, rhythms and dynamics for the following music with a unfied tone (ta-ta, doo-doo, bm-bm):

Faure:  Offertorium, Sanctus and Agnus Dei (Get my markings on the MC webpage Singer Section)
Messiah:  Worthy is the Lamb  (Amen)
Barnett:  Cradle Song
Shaw/Parker: Masters in this Hall
Courtney:    Carols of the Night

We can accomplish this by rehearsing in sectionals.  In these sectionals, work for correct notes, rhythms and dynamics with a pure and unified tone.  We will add text, especially in Fauré on October 9 (this will give you time to write in the English translation).  Here's a look at the upcoming rehearsal plan:

Tuesday, September 25 (start in sectionals)
7:30-9:00pm  (Repertoire from above)
-Warm Up (stretch, breathing exercises, lip trills, vocalize:  ee-ah-hah-hah; mee-moh; zee-zeh-zah, etc.)
-FAH 132  Soprano (Blake Conley directs, Deb Renfroe, piano)  add Paradisium soli tutti lines
-FAH 133  Tenor (Bill Renfroe directs, Amber Kim, piano) add Introit & Kyrie soli tutti lines
-FAH 102  Alto/Bass (Melissa directs, Bob Winslow, piano)
9:00 BREAK
9:15  Tutti (FAH 102 with Dr. Z)
-Masters in this Hall
-Offertorium, Agnus Dei
-Cradle Song
-Worthy (Amen)

Thank you for your score preparation, keep up the good work, it is making a difference!

Sincerely,

Dr. Z

Good Morning!

Nice work on Tuesday evening.  We have learned many notes and rhythms (PRACTICE) and are making progress with the dynamic range from Mr. Faure.  The challenge with the FAURE will be to sing with incredible control and sensitivity while painting a dramatic and dynamic picture.    On Saturday, during our Festival of Voices rehearsals and concert, be aware of the final chords in each of the phrases in Faure's REQUIEM, No. 1 Introit and Kyrie.   Analyze the chords and listen, really listen to what you are a part of as well as your part. We must work to perform every chord and every unison passage perfectly in tune.  Think of it this way . . . know your part and what you are a part of.

Festival of Voices is a time we share our love and knowledge of choral singing with 200 plus high school students.  Here is a break down of the schedule.  You can also get an hour by hour schedule on our the MC webpage:

FESTIVAL OF VOICES 2007

9am-12pm  Rehearsals, Sectionals with High School Students

I can't wait to see the expression on the faces of the high school students when they hear you sing!!!!
