Dr. Elwood Smith
Director of the Festival Women's Chorus

Elwood Smith stepped down this past July as musical director of the Sarasota
based chamber choir Gloria Musicae. He had conducted the ensemble for the
past 11 years. Dr. Smith is Emeritus Professor of Music at Northern Illinois
University where he served as Director of Choral Activities, Director of
Opera Workshop, and Conductor of Musical Theater Productions. He conducted
the Concert Choir, Madrigal Singers, University Chorus, and NIU's community
chorus.
Elwood Smith studied conducting at the Eastman School of Music, Indiana
University, Tanglewood, and the Berlin Academy of Music. He has been musical
director of the National Opera Company (Raleigh, N.C.), on the faculty of
the Brevard Music Center, and has served as musical director for over 50
musical theater productions at professional theaters throughout the
Midwest.
His
honors include a Fulbright Scholarship to Germany, the Excellence in
Teaching Award at NIU, and a lifetime achievement award from the Illinois
Chapter of ACDA. He currently is Director of Music at the Sanibel
Congregation UCC and program annotator for the Southwest Florida Symphony.
